Holy Week and Easter Services

We live an ongoing and repeating story of God’s love, grace and salvation throughout the church year. That story is most on the minds of Christians during the seasons of Advent and Christmas and Lent and Easter.

An entire week is devoted to Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem, where he is first hailed as king. But as the week continues it devolves into accusation, trial and finally crucifixion. We who live on this side of the cross also know that death does not have the final word. Rather we celebrate at Easter the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

We will begin Holy Week on Sunday, April 17, commonly known as Palm/Passion Sunday. We enter worship celebrating the coming of Christ with a procession of palms as described in the gospel of Matthew. Then we enter into the story of Christ’s passion as he stands before Pilate to be judged and then led to his crucifixion.

On Holy Thursday, April 21, we will recall Jesus’ last meal with his disciples and his humble service to them as he knelt to wash the disciples’ feet. We will participate in the ancient ritual of foot-washing, as a reminder of Christ as one who serves and his gentle rejoinder that we ought to wash one another’s feet. Consider wearing socks and shoes that can easily be removed. You may also choose to have your hands washed instead, or simply to reverently observe the ritual.

On Easter morning, April 24, we greet the day at 6:30 a.m. Sunrise Service, followed by breakfast in the town hall. At 10 a.m. Easter worship, we will celebrate the resurrection through scripture and music. Everyone is invited to bring seasonal flowers to adorn the chancel area and welcome the risen Christ.
